Sleepy Hollow is a new series that premiered on FOX last night and I have to say that where I had my doubts at first, I thought it was pretty good!
The original trailer for the series showed us that Ichabod Crane has some how come to our time from the past, as well as the headless horseman and Ichabod is the only person who can help the cops defeat the horseman. So yeah, it seemed pretty eh....but after watching the full pilot, I was pretty impressed with the handling of the idea.
The show starts off with Ichabod Crane as a soldier in the Revolutionary war and he's on the battlefield when a Red Coat shows up with a creepy mask on his face and goes after Ichabod. With an ax he does get a jab at Ichabod but then Ichabod is able to decapitate this Red Coat soldier. We see them both fall to the ground and next thing we see is Ichabod coming out of a grave in a cave and wandering around aimlessly in our present day.
This story actually centers on 2 main characters, one being Ichabod and the other being a female cop named Abbie Mills. So after we see Ichabod wandering around, the show transistions to 2 cops in a diner, an older man and Abbie Mills. They get a call and go to a barn where a man is decapitated and while trying to figure out what is going on, the elder man cop (sorry I can't remember his name, nor is it on IMDB yet), stumbles upon the headless horseman of the past and loses his head. Abbie sees her partner decapitated and gets real confused as the heads are cauterized, she sees that the axe the headless horseman uses is hot, but how can this be? She's also upset as she was really close with her partner and we come to find that he was like a father figure to her.
This is Ichabod Crane.
This is Lt. Abbie Mills
So that's just the beginning, and a whole bunch of crazy stuff happens throughout the episode. We find out that the headless horseman is just one of the 4 horsemen of the apocalypse. We find that there is more to Abbie Mills than one would think and discover that a piece of her past might actually connect her to Ichabod Crane and the Headless Horseman. We find that there are witches, (as to how Ichabod slept for 250 years and woke up) we find that some of the present day policeman actually know what's going on and are in on the Headless Horseman's activities, so we have no idea who's good and who's evil. John Cho (Harold and Kumar, Star Trek) and Orlando Jones are also in this. And we find out that Abbie's father figure boss knew about Abbie's past and all the supernatural stuff going on that led up to the horseman coming to town. This first episode was completely jam packed with stuff and it wasn't obnoxious, it was done pretty well and I can't wait to see what's next!
Katrina, who's always been an important character in the Legend of Sleepy Hollow does make it onto the show, and as a very important character. I don't wanna give it all a way but I figured I'd put her in here for intrigue.
Orlando Jones is the Chief of Police and I think there's more to him than meets the eye.
This show also has a pretty good humor aspect to it in the subject of Ichabod being from the time of the Revolutionary War. They make sure to keep the historical part pretty accurate. He was shocked that Abbie Mills was a woman of color and also a lieutenant. There's a point where he talks of how he doesn't understand most of what anyone is saying as the dialect has changed so much. He is fascinated by many of the things we don't think about today, like cars, power windows, Starbucks, paved roads, etc.
FOX has brought us a great new show that totally goes along with the Autumn tone right now!
The only thing that I want to be picky about is the fact that the character of Ichabod Crane is supposed to be a little gawky, awkward and a bit clumsy where as this show got themselves a hottie to play him and he's not real clumsy at all except for the fact that he's been introduced to a new world. I would have liked a little more goofy/nerdy Ichabod, but since the rest of the show was fun, I'll deal with it.
If you didn't check out the show yet, I recommend it!
